With the 200 new features Apple added to its recent software releases, one might think that this will eliminate the need for a jailbreak. However, Absinthe download figures prove otherwise.

A quick reminder, Absinthe is the GreenPoison jailbreak tool released last Friday to untether jailbreak A5 devices (iPad 2 and iPhone 4S). Hacker Joshua Hill, better known as P0sixninja, the frontman for the Chronic Dev Team informed Cult of Mac that Absinthe witnessed a download number of over 1 million on January 20th.

Over 1 million since Jan 20th, that is even before the Windows version of Absinthe was released the following day.

To better put this number into prespective, the last jailbreak to witness such incredible download numbers was the web-based JailbreakMe tool.

iPhone Dev Team MuscleNerd has also tweeted that there were 250,000 new Cydia installs over the weekend meaning that a substantial fraction of Absinthe is for first-time jailbreakers that created a Cydia ID.

The Dev Team blog has provided a detailed statistics of the iPhone 4S/iPad2 jailbreaks over the weekend

  • 491,325 new iPhone (4S) devices
  • 308,967 new iPad 2 devices
  • 152,940 previously jailbroken iPad 2 devices
  • Total: 953,232 new A5 jailbreaks in a little over 3 days.
