The upcoming OLED iPhone 8 model that is expected to come with a redesigned Touch ID will use Apple’s in-house fingerprint solution, according to a new report from the DigiTimes. The report further adds that Apple will make use of AuthenTec algorithm, a company it acquired back in 2012, and Privaris glass identification technology.

The whole Touch ID module will be fabricated at 65nm process node by TSMC. Apple won’t be able to begin iPhone 8’s production until September due to the redesigned fingerprint solution for the device. This 5.8-inch iPhone 8 will reportedly feature an OLED display manufactured by Samsung, while the other two iPhone variants will be “s” upgrades featuring LCD display and will enter into production from July, the report adds.

Apple’s in-house developed fingerprint ID solution will be fabricated at TSMC’s 12-inch line using 65nm process technology, said the sources, adding that production for the new OLED iPhone is unlikely to start until September due to the redesigned fingerprint ID solution.

With this new fingerprint scanner solution, Apple will be able to completely remove the physical Home button from the OLED iPhone 8. The report further adds that the iPhone 8 will feature a biometric authentication system that will make use of ultrasound for iris or facial recognition.

Apple is widely rumored to launch a brand new 10th-anniversary edition iPhone 8 in 2017 with 5.8-inch OLED display with a bezel-free design. With the help of OLED display, Apple could introduce Home button-free design with a fingerprint sensor embedded into or beneath the display. The physical home button area will then be used as “Function area” just like the touch bar on the Macbook. The long-range wireless charging has also been rumored over and over for the upcoming iPhone models.
