Google has unveiled its much anticipated first attempt of developing its own hardware and software combination in the shape of Pixel and Pixel XL smartphones. With these latest Android-based smartphones, Apple is taking an Apple-like approach to its smartphone lineup. Unlike the Nexus line of devices, Google won’t be outsourcing hardware research and development to other smartphone makers for the Pixel smartphones. Google, itself, will now research, design, and develop both the hardware and software ends of the devices.

Google not only took control over the hardware and software sides of the devices, it also positioned its Pixel smartphone against Apple iPhone 7 by setting the same high-end pricing. Specs wise, Google Pixel some impressive hardware component inside its aerospace-grade aluminium body. On the back, the device has a glass window. The glass on the back and the front side makes use of Corning’s 2.5D Gorilla Glass 4.

Google Pixel carries a 12.3MP camera sensor with f/2.0 aperture and 1.55u pixels. The device features LaserAF and PDAF that allows the camera to be quick and accurate when capturing differing shots. While the Google Pixel is not equipped with OIS, it does make use of gyroscope with the camera to offer better EIS.

The Pixels smartphones are powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 821 chipset clocked at 2.15GHz. The devices sport 4GB of RAM and Adreno 530 GPU. Both the Pixel and Pixel XL are available in 32GB and 128GB storage options. Unlike the latest iPhone 7 and the iPhone 7 Plus, Google Pixels devices feature a 3.5mm audio jack.

Google Pixel not only comes with great hardware specs, Google has also improved its camera software that features Smartburst option. This Smartburst feature automatically selects the best picture from a quick-fire set of photos. The devices also feature HDR+ feature that helps in improving low-light photos. The HDR+ feature, unlike Nexus devices, is on by default and has no shutter lag.

Both the Pixel and Pixel XL will run on Android 7.1 Nougat that comes with Google Assistant built into it. Google Assistant is a smart voice assistant like Siri but offers much more options than Siri.

Google Pixels starts from $649 in the United States, while the larger Pixel XL starts from $769. Google’s pricing strategy clearly shows that the search giant is clearly positioning its new Pixel and Pixel XL smartphone as premium devices that compete with the likes of Apple iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus. Both devices will be available in three different color options. The devices are available for pre-order in the United States, Germany, United Kingdom, Canada, and Australia. Both Pixel devices will be available in retail store from October 20th.
