As it stands right now, rumors are swirling that Apple is at least considering jumping into the automotive industry in the form of a brand new electric vehicle.

Now, courtesy of an interview with Bloomberg, the former CEO of General Motors, Dan Akerson, has weighed in on the subject, and he doesn’t think it’s going to be all that easy for Apple to jump into the automotive industry. Simply put, Akerson believes that Apple might not be fully aware of all the things necessary, or all the pdiffulcities associated with, working in the car industry. He notes that working around safety and regulatory issues is one of the hardest parts of the industry, and Apple may not have the position to work around them.

“They’d better think carefully if they want to get into the hard-core manufacturing,” he said of Apple. “We take steel, raw steel, and turn it into car. They have no idea what they’re getting into if they get into that.“

Akerson held his position at General Motors for three and a half years and has had several other jobs in the auto industry. The former executive said he believes that Apple should stick to in-car electronics for legacy car makers, like the Cupertino-based company is currently doing with CarPlay.

Akerson’s comments come after the Wall Street Journal, Reuters, and The Financial Times reported that Apple has a team together working on a car. It’s not clear if this is something that is actually coming to market, however these publications report the building is actually happening.

Recently, Apple’s unmarked mini vans have appeared on video several times, which continues to lend credence to the rumors that Apple is at least considering working into the automobile industry.
