According to a new report from Apple Insider, a discussion thread on Apple’s support forum is now 664 replies big with nearly everyone complaining about minor scratches on the edges of the front glass that can be felt via their fingernail and thumb. Many users report that they never faced this problem on their iPhone 5s or 5. Others who scheduled a Genius appointment for this issue were disappointed by their response of the scratches being classified under cosmetic damage, and thus not being covered under warranty.
Apple had previously used Corning’s Gorilla Glass on its iPhone, but it touts that the new iPhones feature an ion strengthened glass. These glasses undergo a chemical process where the sodium ion is replaced by potassium ions, which makes them larger and stronger. They are then polished and broken down into the desired shape.
There are any number of reasons as to why Apple’s iPhone 6 is seemingly more prone to screen scratches. For one, the latest generation iPhone is the first to use a curved display glass with no bezel “lip” to protect against scrapes. Previous iPhones like the most recent iPhone 5s used flat pieces of glass surrounded by a thermoplastic peripheral material housed in a harder polymer wrap. This structure helped for shock protection, deflecting encounters with foreign objects and would keep the screen protected if laid down on its face.
