Though most iPhone owners think about replacing their handset once in 2 years, when contracts also end, Consumer Intelligence Research Partners report that the replacement cycle of the iPad is far longer.

The survey, conducted among 2,000 U.S. customers purchasing iPad, iPhone or Mac last year, informs that the tablet is edging closer to the average lifespan of Mac – 2 to 4 years.

There are a lot of similarities in iPhone and iPad usage as both rely on App Stores. And though 8 of 10 people will replace a stolen or broken iPhone in 2 days, only 50% will replace an iPad in this timespan.

The stats are not surprising, as people can’t image leaving their homes without iPhones, but iPad is used morel a mac, iPod or television. Fortune says:

“We think Apple would prefer the iPad become a big iPhone,” the report concludes. “We suspect, though, based on recent CIRP data about how buyers use them, that it’s as much like a Mac, TV, or iPod, with less frequent replacement.”

Another interesting stat is that 4 out of 10 people will gift their older iPad to friend or family after buying new one. iPhone users on the other hand are happy trading the handset when upgrading, which supports the stat that their only a percent or two percent iPhone owners purchase their first phone. The first time iPad buyers accounted for 78% last December.
