Before Apple announced the iPhone 4S in October, We were all expecting a brand new, completely inwardly-outwardly redesigned iPhone, but instead we got an inwardly redesigned compromise. The question that raised at the time was why wasn`t the iPhone 5 released instead of iPhone 4S. We have a scenario for this iPhone launch delay by the 9to5mac folks trying to get a straight story from Apple employees and other sources.
It was reported that Apple would introduce iPhone 4S at the WWDC 2011 with Siri technology integrated and a new operating system, the iOS 5, but it faced several hindrances. By Feburary, Apple was just starting to introduce the iOS 5 code into Siri which means a developer beta of iOS 5 wouldn’t possibly be ready by April. So if Apple were to announce iPhone 4S at the WWDC, that would also mean a public release for iOS 5 which wasn`t possible at the time.
That`s why Apple didn`t hint about a new iPhone at this year`s WWDC.
Since the iPhone 4S is similar in design to the iPhone 4, Apple could have integrated a new iOS 4 firmware version and release it at the WWDC 2011, but then again, what kind of customer would go for a minor refreshed version of iPhone 4 with no Siri or new software especially that iPhone 5 rumors were heavily circulating.So,a WWDC iPhone release became impossible.
At the same time, Foxconn was working on the design for the new iPhone 5 which is rumored to be slimmer. Foxconn was producing 150.000 units per day. Apple thought to accelerate the iPhone 5 production to be released by Fall 2011 leaving the iPhone 4S as a mid-range iPhone.
However in June, Foxconn experienced problems with fitting all the iPhone components in the new thin design. We know for sure Foxconn founder was talking about the new iPhone 5 since the iPhone 4S is identical in design to iPhone 4 so they shouldn`t be facing any problems.
The delays caused by production and design negatively affected the release date of the new iPhone 5 this year. For these reason, the iPhone 5 plan was shelved and the iPhone 4S was ramped up.
The launch date for the iPhone 5 is rumored to be in summer 2012.
