If you’re a Skype Android app user, you can breathe easy; Skype has released an Android update which addresses the flaw reported earlier this week.Friday April 15th, and independent Android specialist discovered a flaw in Skype’s Android app. This flaw allowed third party apps on the same mobile device to potentially access information from Skype Android app users such as personal details, contacts lists, and even chat logs. However, as of today, Skype has released a new version of the Android app which fixes this vulnerability.
According to a statement on Adrian Asher, Chief Information Security Officer, on Skype’s official blog, the company worked over the weekend to develop and test out the new app which addresses the flaw. This is a good sign for Skype Android users, and even better? It appears as though Skype has received no reports of security breaches, “We have had no reported examples of any 3rd party malicious application misusing information from the Skype directory on Android devices and will continue to monitor closely. Please rest assured that we do take your privacy and security very seriously and we sincerely apologies for any concern this issue may have caused.†The update is available on Skype.com and Android markets.
While it’s never good to have had one’s security compromised, there is at least one bonus for Skype’s Android app users. Along with the security update, the app now enables calls over 3G networks in the United States. The addition is long awaited, and one wonders if Skype had been planning the release of 3G ability or if the release of the feature is an apology gift – like roses from the boyfriend who forgot his girlfriend’s birthday. Regardless, for Skype Android users, it means they can breathe easy again.
