Apple iPhone XS and iPhone XS devices fail to start charging when they are connected to a lightning cable. This is what numerous iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max owners are reporting in the Apple Support Community. The users claim that when the screen of the device is turned off and they try to put the device on charge, but it won’t start charging with the screen turned off.
The experience with “iPhone XS or iPhone XS Max won’t start charging with screen off” varies. In most of the cases, the iPhone XS Max begins charging as soon as the user wakes up the device by raising or tapping on the screen. However, for some victims of the issue, they have to wake up the iPhone XS, disconnect and reconnect the Lightning cable in order to get a charge. In rare cases, the iPhone XS stops responding with the Lightning cable plugged in and the screen turned off.
The guy behind Unbox Therapy has demonstrated the issues on YouTube by plugging a Lightning cable into an iPhone X, four units of iPhone XS Max, and four iPhone XS devices. While the iPhone X starting charging immediately, it appears three iPhone XS Max units and two of the iPhone XS units in the demonstration failed to start charging.
Unbox Therapy uses a hashtag #ChargeGate for this iPhone XS charging issue. Here is the video:
One can easily come across dozens of discussion threads across the web, Apple Support Community, YouTube, Reddit, Twitter, and other social platforms. However, at this time, it still remains unknown how widespread the charging issue with iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max is. But not everyone is affected.
Some users blamed the USB Restricted Mode that Apple introduced with iOS 11.4.1. The feature prevents iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch devices to communicate over a Lightning connector connection if the device remains locked for an hour or longer.
Apple has enabled the USB Restricted Mode in iOS 12 by default. However, the affected users and YouTubers claim that disabling the feature does no good. Apple also has a Support Document that says the devices will charge as usual when connected to a power source with the feature toggled on.
On YouTube, some of the users reported that they are experiencing the same issue with their older iPhone and iPad devices. This hints that there are chances of this being a software glitch that Apple can address with a software update.
For now, there seems to be no workaround to fix the iPhone XS Max Won’t start charging issue. If you have one such device, you should contact Apple Support. Apple collects the information and diagnostics to their engineers to come up with a fix, so your feedback will be helpful to them.
