The camera has become one of the key features of a smartphone that greatly affects customer’s purchase decision. So, ranking the flagship smartphones from different OEMs based on their camera quality is inevitable. Consumer Report has come up with their latest analytics ranking the cameras offered by different OEMs in their latest crop of smartphones.

The first glance at the latest ranking list from Consumer Report reveals that both the Apple and Samsung have the lion’s share of the list. In the top 10 list, Apple has six of its smartphones while the Samsung managed to take four spots with their smartphones.

This is what Consumer Report has to say about the smartphone camera ranking results:

All of the top 10 phones did very well in our tests of still-image quality, which evaluate resolution, dynamic range, color accuracy, and visual noise. The all-around top performers in that area were the iPhone X and 8 Plus, which just nudged past their iPhone 8 sibling.

Here is the list of top-10 smartphones on the list of smartphone camera ranking by Consumer Report:

And, here is the list itself:

  • Apple iPhone X
  • Apple iPhone 8
  • Apple iPhone 8 Plus
  • Samsung Galaxy S8+
  • Apple iPhone 7
  • Apple iPhone 6s Plus
  • Samsung Galaxy S8
  • Samsung Galaxy Note8
  • Apple iPhone 7 Plus
  • Samsung Galaxy S8 Active

The most of the results are based on the performance while capturing the still photos, however, the video quality is also part of the overall equation. Consumer Report has rated both the iPhone X and iPhone 8 as “excellent” in their testing while the iPhone 8 Plus managed to secure “very good” ranking. The report fails to dissect how the smaller iPhone 8 managed to get a better ranking than the iPhone 8 Plus with a dual camera setup.

The list seems a bit odd to me. First, the iPhone 8 Plus which has a better camera than its smaller sibling is ranked below the iPhone 8. Second, both the Galaxy S8+ and Galaxy S8 with the same camera setup are so far apart. Last, but not the least, the list does not include the Google Pixel or Google Pixel 2 XL.
