A story surfaced last week that Apple’s upcoming EarPods would include biometric sensors for reading health related stuff. Secret posted the leak, saying that some ex-Apple employee reported about it.

The info has no verification, but it still appeared in UK news outlets and major tech blogs in the US. Now the rumor’s creator says it was made up while in the toilet. Sigh.

The unnamed creator said on Tumblr:

“I made it up,”
“I wrote it 5 minutes after I woke up on the 1st of may. I was blurry eyed, I had a headache, I was using the toilet and worrying about my blood pressure.”

The original post at Secret said that new EarPods would include blood pressure sensors, a heart rate sensor, a lightning connector, an iBeacon integration and serve as an iWatch gateway. Things got weird when the rumor was posted on Reddit.

“That’s where it really went crazy. The discussion on Reddit are worthy of an episode of the X-files. The Kremlinology going on was amazing. I was supposedly working for Apple at one point and then for Nike and they suggested I was one of the people fired from their team. So it’s not really the speed of which it took off, more how it grew into all these other things at the same time that surprised me most.”

The author created the fake product as a joke, but also wished for such an accessory to help him with health-related readings. He didn’t intend it to be popular, until it went popular by itself. He would love some iBeacons in his headphones..
