12% devices, or one out of 8 iOS devices, are on iOS 6, and only 3 percent of active devices are on older firmwares.

Putting these stats in context, Apple last time said iOS 7 adoption rate was 74% after releasing iOS 7 in September, 2013. 80% iOS devices were running iOS 7 in January, 2014, and if that number is compared, the device owners upgrading to iOS 7 have slowed down in number, but that’s expected as 6 months have passed since iOS 7 was released.
Coming over to Android distribution and data collected for a 7-day period ending on 3 March, 2014, 64 percent of devices accessing the Play Store were on Jelly Bean, while 35.5 percent were running previous versions. AND ONLY 2.5 percent had the latest KitKat.
Some caveats from Google:
Because this data is gathered from the new Google Play Store app, which supports Android 2.2 and above, devices running older versions are not included.
However, in August, 2013, versions older than Android 2.2 accounted for about one percent of devices that checked in to Google servers (not those that actually visited Google Play Store).
Google’s OS has always been behind iOS in terms of OS adoption as well as device fragmentation and the latest stats add to the fact.
Apple is also making it easy for providing OTA firmware updates and requiring new and existing apps to be made/updated for iOS 7.
