Apple Pay works abroad with a U.S credit card

Yesterday, Apple released iOS 8.1 with Apple Pay bringing NFC-based payment to iPhone 6 and 6 Plus owners in the United States that already works in a bunch of retail stores.
While Apple clearly mentions that Apple Pay works only in the United States, it looks like it is easy to get the feature to work in other regions of the world as well as reported by many users on the Whirpool forums.
