Apple is reportedly working on integrating a technology called FeliCa that will allow iPhone owners in Japan to pay for public transit rides from their phone instead of using a physical payment card.

FeliCa is a one-touch mobile payment standard developed by Sony for Japan. There are multiple providers of transit payment cards, but all of them use the same underlying technology of FeliCa. The Bloomberg report cites that Apple intends on working with multiple transit card providers, including Suica and Pasmo networks to integrate the technology into the iPhone.

Theoretically, virtual representations of the transit passes would be stored in the iPhone’s Wallet application, said the person, who asked not be identified because the planning is private.

Lastly, the Bloomberg report mentions that Apple is working on a major redesign for the 2017 iPhone that will see the company completely remove the Home button. Previous rumors have also pointed to Apple ditching the home button for the 2017 iPhone and integrating the Touch ID sensor directly into the display.

It remains to be seen how Apple will achieve this since no other OEM has managed to integrate the fingerprint scanner on the display of their smartphone yet. With the 2017 iPhone coming with an all-new glass design and an OLED design, it seems like Apple has some big changes planned for the 10th anniversary of the device.
