Was Apple’s killing of skeuomorphism all for Apple Watch?

When Apple made a big push to stamp out skeuomorphism in iOS — and more recently in OS X — we just assumed Jony Ive didn’t like it. But could it be that it was all in preparation for the Apple Watch, which couldn’t have displayed skeuomorphic icons on its tiny screen?
