Google has had its own Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO) for quite a while now, dubbed as Project Fi. However, Google’s selection of devices for its MVNO wireless service has been very limited.
While the Project Fi supported devices other than Google’s own Pixel smartphones, the list of supported devices has not been very impressive. This is changing today. Today, Google has announced that it is going to rename its “Project Fi” to “Google Fi” to reflect a broader availability of the wireless service. The company is going to add support for more Android devices from the likes of Samsung, OnePLus, LG, and Motorola.
Google has also announced that the “Google Fi” will support Apple’s iPhone smartphones. while Google did not get into the specifics of which iPhone model will be supported, there’s a possibility that even the older iPhone models might be able to take advantage of the virtual wireless network.
For those who are not familiar, Google Fi is a mobile virtual network operator launched by Google. It provides phone, messaging and data services using both the Wi-Fi and cellular networks belonging to Sprint, U.S Cellular, T-Mobile, and Three in the United States. Google Fi was launched back in 2015 as Project Fi.
Google Fi seamlessly switches between Wi-Fi networks and the likes of Sprint and T-Mobile, depending on which one is offering better possible service and connectivity. The switching is designed to be quick and seamless. This means more devices are going to show better performance by using Google Fi.
Some plan features will depend on the Android or iOS device you use. So if you’re looking for the full Google Fi experience, including Fi’s unique technology to seamlessly switch between multiple cellular networks, you can use a phone designed for Fi—like the Pixel 3, Moto G6, and any other phone available on the Google Fi website. These phones include special hardware and software to move effortlessly between Google Fi’s networks and provide you with even more security and reliability through Fi’s new enhanced network feature.
Google says that the Google Fi setup process on the iPhone has some additional steps but does not go into the details when announcing the support. The Google Fi iOS app will guide you through all the steps to set up the wireless network service. Google says that the iPhone support is still in beta phase so users may experience some rough edges.
With the announcement, Google also started a limited time promotion. Today only, if you subscribe to Google Fi service and buy a new phone, Google will give you gift cards that total up to the full cost of the phone. However, if you have your own device, you will get $200 Google Fi service credit that should cover your service bill for quite some time.
