The iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus are reportedly capable of playing back 4K video thanks to the new A8 chip, reports TUAW.

The discovery was made by the developers of WALTR, a great Mac app that allows users to quickly upload video files to their iPhone which aren’t supported by iTunes, such as FLAC and MKV files. While testing the app developers found it is possible to playback 4K videos on the iPhone 6. Even if Apple hasn’t announced it, the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus are ready to play 4K videos.

So for iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus owners, that last little detail could have been a bit troublesome. However, a new report published on Friday, November 21 by TUAW points out that, thanks to the Apple A8 processor under the hood of both handsets, watching 4K video is actually quite possible. This is potentially a big deal for many iPhone 6/Plus owners, considering the native resolution of the smaller variant is only 1330×750, and the larger model’s screen resolution is 1920×1080.
