September 9 is very near and I am sure it is going to be a big day with many surprises as Apple is getting ready to announce the new iPhone 6. A new report today says that the iPhone 6 could boast a new resolution, something different than what we’ve heard in the past.

The last report we’ve heard was from a couple of days ago and it was saying that iPhone 6 could feature a resolution of 960 x 1704. Today and according to a report published by 9to5Mac a new resolution has been found buried within the latest Xcode 6 Software Development Kit (SDK), which was recently released to developers through a beta.

The report indicates that the new resolution was found in a file for iOS 8′s “Springboard” application. Springboard, if that doesn’t sound familiar, is what the Home screen is called, and where all your application icons sit idly by waiting to get tapped on. The file in question is used by iOS to outline where those aforementioned icons will sit on the iPhone’s home screen(s). The file was apparently available within the fifth beta for Xcode 6, and it’s still present within the sixth beta that was released for the software recently, is optimized for a display with a resolution of 414 x 736.

It should be noted that the iPhone SDK analyzes hardware resolutions by a “points value” system, which means that Apple’s “Retina” resolution is double or triple the numbers that are presented in the SDK. The example presented by 9to5Mac is a good one: The 4-inch display on the current generation iOS devices have a resolution of 640 x 1136, but the SDK showcases that same resolution as 320 x 568.

Like in previous devices, this new resolution also represents an aspect ratio of 16:9, which isn’t that much of a surprise, considering it would mean an easier transition for developers as they build their apps to take advantage of the new hardware on the market. It’s also an easy bet, considering the leaked images we’ve seen of the 4.7-inch iPhone 6 to date.

To make sense of what this other potential iPhone resolution could mean for the iPhone 6, we’ve calculated what this resolution would mean at a Retina “2X” scale on new 4-inch (just for completeness, there has been no indication that a revamped 4-inch model is coming) , 4.7-inch, and 5.5-inch screens:

And the iPhone 6 with a 5.5-inch display:

Nice right ?
